The unfortunate reaction of Muslims all over the world must have caused a great deal of anguish to the soul of our beloved Holy Prophet. How he would have reacted to such an occurrence? Here is a well documented a historic parallel.

When the holy Prophet left Mecca after 13 years of persecution and arrived in Medina. In 622 A.D, the Meccan Chief addressed a letter to Abdullah bin Ubbay bin Salul, a well known leader of Medina, who was soon to be the king of Medina, urging him to restrain the Prophet.

Abdullah became a Muslim but secretly worked against the interests of Islam and thus became known as the chief of Hypocrites. The arrival of Holy prophet had despoiled his plans to become the chief of Medina. Abdullah bin Ubbay bin Salul thought it to be a God-sent opportunity and started his plans to denigrate Holy Prophet. The betel of Uhad which Muslims lost provided a fit occasion. In the meantime a nearby tribe of Banu Mustaliq was planning to attack Medina; Muslims foiled this attack in time and defeated them.

Holy Prophet decided to stay in the town of Banu Mustaliq. Soon after a row arose between an immigrant Muslim (known a Mohajir) and a local Muslim of Medina (known as Ansar). Abdullah bin ubbay bin salul cleverly exploited the situation to his advantage and made a provocative speech and said “Let us return to, Medina then the most honored (himself) among the citizens will turn out the most despised and meanest (meaning the Holy Prophet). Through his uncle, a young man reported this observation to the Holy Prophet. The Prophet sent for Abdullah bin Ubbay bin Salul and his friends. They totally denied it and said it is not true. The Prophet said nothing. The truth began to spread.

Abdullah bin Ubbay’s son Abdullah heard this report. He was a devout Muslim and approached the Prophet and submitted “Oh Prophet my father has insulted you. Death is the punishment. If you decide so, I would rather have you command me to kill my father. If you ask someone else and my father dies at his hand. I may have to avenge my father’s killing and I may incur the displeasure of God in this way”. The prophet said, “I have no such intention. I will treat your father with compassion and consideration.”

This did not satisfy his son. He went to his father and stopped him in a threatening way and said he would not let him proceed further on road to Medina until he withdrew his words.

The lips which said that the Prophet is meanest and despised and I am the honoured must now say “the prophet is most honored and I am the despised”. His father was astonished and frightened and had no option but to say “I agree, my son, that Muhammad is the most honored and I am the meanest”.

This was not a mere incident or a trifle event. God in the Holy Quran spoke about it:

“They say, if we return to Medina, the one most exalted will, surely drive out there from the one most mean, while honor belong to Allah and his messenger.”(63:9)

And this is not all, when Abdullah bin Ubbay bin Salul died the Holy Prophet himself led his funeral prayers (a singular honor). When Hadhrat Omar, who latter became the second caliph, heard this, he tried to persuade the Prophet not to lead his funeral by quoting verse 7 of the same chapter of the Holy Quran:

“Whether thou (the Prophet) ask forgiveness for them or ask not forgiveness for them Allah will never forgive them.”

Anyhow the prophet led his funeral prayers and placed his own shirt on his dead body despite the protest.

The holy Prophet might have prayed for the Danish Cartoonist as well prayed for his forgiveness.

The Qur’an was written down by Muhammad’s companions (sahabah) while he was alive, although the prime method of transmission was orally. It was compiled in the time of Abu Bakr, the first caliph, and was standardized in the time of Uthman, the third caliph. The Qur’an in its actual form is generally considered by academic scholars to record the words spoken by Muhammad because the search for variants in Western academia has not yielded any differences of great significance and that historically controversy over the content of the Qur’an has never become a main point. [22][23] Therefore all Muslims, Sunni or Shia use the same Qur’an.
