PEMRA threats Aaj TV

April 23, 2007

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority has issued a show-cause notice to Aaj TV (“TV Today”). Show-Cause Notice is issued due to Aaj TV’s open & bold coverage of Judicial Crisis of Pakistan. PEMRA has said in its notice that if PEMRA is not satisfied Transmission of Aaj TV in Pakistan can be blocked. PEMRA is a state owned media controlling authority.

Arshad Zuberi, Director of Aaj TV, told BBC that he received the notice on Sunday night. Previously they have been receiving notices relating to different television programmes telecasted by Aaj TV, but PEMRA was always satisfied with Aaj TV’s replies.

Aaj TV pro-actively telecasted live coverage of Chief Justice’s reception at Peshawar High Court on Saturday, which might have stirred Government to issue such notice. Pakistani Media including Geo & Aaj TV have been pro-actively capturing & airing the issues relating to CJP’s suspension.

GEO TV’s office was attacked, its programmes were blocked, even its office in state capital Isalamabad was attacked by Police. Later, President apologised from Geo TV. But soon after the attack, Pakistani media was heavily bribed by the government thru advertisements, but Aaj TV continued with its coverage and did not care of Government’s sentiments – I, quite a few weeks ago raised this point in another post (Bribing the Media) that only Aaj TV is presenting the true picture of Pakistan – now finally when Government couldn’t take more truth – they have issued a threat to the TV Channel.

Arshad told that they are abiding by the directions & instructions issued by Supreme Judicial Council (the one who is hearing President’s reference against Chief Justice). Aaj TV has to reply to the Government in 3 days – if Government is satisfied with the reply there wouldn’t be any hearing or action, otherwise there would hearings and in return Aaj TV might get blocked by PEMRA (who by large controls nationwide cable operators).

Don’t follow Google blindly

April 23, 2007

Try this

1. open Google
2. click on “maps”
3. click on “get directions”
4. type “London” in the first box (the “from” box)
5. type “New York” in the second box (the “to” box)
6. scroll to step 37.

easier way to do it.

Click me to do it for you

This showed up when a friend’s wife wanted to take a flight from London to New York and thought of checking directions from google map.

Step # 37 says – swim across the atlantic ocean 3,462 miles

another interesting fact.

atleast google gets you the directions from London to New York, otherwise Yahoo maps & Windows live maps say that “no route exists” meaning that you can not go from London to New York

try it for yourself

Ustad Asad Amanat Ali Passes away

April 9, 2007

Ustad Asad Amanat Ali Khan passed away last night in London. He was in London for his medical checkup, he suffered a heart attack and couldn’t succumb and passed away. May his soul rest in Peace (Inna Lillahi wa Inna eLaihe rajeoon).

He was son of Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, nephew of Ustad Fateh Ali & Ustad Hamid Ali Khan and was elder brother of Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan.

He belonged to the famous Patila Gharana of music. After the demise of his father, he gained popularity by singing famous ghazal of Insha jee, ‘Insha Jee Utho abb kooch karo – iss shehar mein dil ko lagaana kya’ (Insha, Lets depart from the city – its not worth staying).

The song which gained him the most was ‘Umra`n Langhiya`n Pabba`n Bhaar’ (Life went away problems).

Beside Ghazal, Asad Amanat Ali Khan was master of filmi songs, thumri, folk songs as well as in classical music – which is idiosyncratic to his family. Asad started his career in Radio Pakistan, Lahore.

Apart from him, Patiala Gharana (family) produced musicians in the likes of Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, Ustad Hamid Ali Khan, Ustad Barray Fateh Ali Khan, Ustad Ashiq Ali Khan and Ustad Akhter Hussain.

Pakistan is now left with very few in classical music.

It happens only in India

Once cricketers were ranked as gods and cricket as religion “Cricket is our religion – Sachin is our god”. But now a village court (panchayat)  has banned Cricket in 25+ villages of Haryna District.

Daily Telegraph Reports

It may have the status of a religion across India, but a small village has banned cricket in response to the country’s dismal performance at the cricket World Cup this year.

The decision by the Uchana council in Jind district, some 120 miles north west of New Delhi, is also supported by 27 surrounding villages that are considering imposing their own embargoes.

Village elders, infuriated with India’s failure to make even the last eight in the tournament in the West Indies and frustrated by the media coverage of the country’s failing cricketers, announced yesterday that anyone opposing the ban would face being ostracised socially.

“We believe cricket is as bad for society as a disc jockey. A wise man once said that cricket is not our sport. We should race and play football and volleyball,” the council’s secretary, Jogi Ram, said.

In the conservative Haryana state, DJs are associated with western licentiousness and frowned upon by elders in rural areas.

Other council members declared that the restriction would be no great loss as cricket was not India’s national game.

Locals privately concede that their principal reason for the ban was the poor overall performance of the star India batsman Virender Sehwag, who comes from their part of India and had enjoyed iconic status before the World Cup debacle.

Upon returning from the West Indies last week along with the rest of the Indian team, Sehwag and his colleagues were given a police escort home for protection against angry and disappointed fans.

The homes of all the cricket team have been given armed guards by the respective state governments after scores of incensed fans destroyed the home of wicket keeper Mohinder Dhoni in eastern India following India’s surprise loss to Bangladesh in its first match on March 18.

Another Report by ibnlive

Jeend (Haryana): India’s performance in the World Cup has left many disappointed. But a village in Haryana has gone a step further and imposed a blanket ban on cricket.

The children in Jeend may just be playing their last game of cricket. Call it a fallout of India’s World Cup debacle or disillusionment with the sport. The Uchana village Panchayat in Haryana’s Jeend district has decided to ban the game.

The Panchayat’s decision to boycott cricket also has the support of 27 other villages. The village elders say it’s no great loss as it’s not even the country’s national game.

“We all have taken this decision and those who go against it will have to face social boycott. We have enshrined this in the Panchayat records of 28 villages,” Tewa Singh, the head of Dadan Panchayat says.

“We believe cricket is as bad for society as a DJ (disc jockey) is. A wise man once said that cricket is not our sport. We should race and play football and volleyball,” says secretary Jogi Ram.

The Indian team’s performance at the World Cup may have been the last straw, but most of these villagers want other games lost in the shadow of cricket to be given their due. And the decision to ban cricket doesn’t seem to have upset the children either.

“If our elders don’t play we also wont play,” Sanjay, a resident of the village, says.

“We will stop playing it. We will play kabaddi, football, volleyball and wrestle instead,” Pankaj, another resident, adds.

And even though a reshuffle is on the cards for the Indian team, in this part of the country it’s not just a few players who are facing public anger but the game itself seems to have fallen from favour.

Bhutto Sahib
Today on 4th April, I can’t utter much of my own – those who are interested can visit the following website.

Wait, read this speech first.

Look at Bhutto’s vision.

He long ago forecasted about Russia – in Security Council – targetting specifically the russian envoy,

Today, it is Pakistan. We are your guinea pigs today. But there will be other guinea pigs and you will see what happens. You will see how the chain of events unfolds itself. You want us to lick the dust. We are not going to lick the dust.”

ISI & ‘The Men in Black’

April 3, 2007

Several ‘funny’/’interesting’ incidents took place outside the apex Supreme Court of Pakistan’s building.

1. Lawyers caught a mini group of ‘men in black‘ – who were shouting slogans in favor of General Musharraf when CJP appeared before SJC for to defend his reference.

Later on the people who were airing these slogans ;when interrogated by the lawyers who were in great numbere protesting against the reference; a person named Fayyaz said that he belongs to a ‘sensitive department’ & is a resident of Punjab Province. The ‘sensitive’ department is usually used for either Pakistan Army or ISI (Inter Services Intelligence).

?? Musharraf is now using ISI’s men to regain popularity by the cheapest means ever.

2. A lawyer, Col. (Retd.) Anwar Afridi threw away all the medals & insignias which were awarded to him by Pakistan Army during his service times.

Protests by lawyers & opposition parties are going on throughout the country – last night almost 300+ workers of different parties were arrested in Lahore only. Qazi Hussain Ahmed was put in house arrest for 2 days.

Details would be updated as soon as I get them.
