Supreme Court stays Supreme Judicial Council’s Proceedings

Supreme Court larger bench on Monday issued stay order for suspending the proceedings of the Supreme Judicial Council. The bench also ordered formation of a full court bench.

The Supreme Court five-member larger bench headed by Justice M Javed Buttar heard the petitions related to the presidential reference and challenge the suspension of chief justice, his forced leave, and composition and competence of the Supreme Judicial Council.

Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan was representing the chief justice in the hearing, while Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada and Malik Qayyum appearing on behalf of the President and the federation respectively.

Earlier, the larger bench of the apex court in preliminary hearing rejected objections of Moulvi Iqbal Advocate over the head of the Supreme Judicial Council.

The government lawyers Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada and Ahmed Raza Kasuri gave arguments on the appeal for constitution of the full court bench.

The counsel of Referring Authority Ibrahim Satti filed amended appeal for constitution of the full court bench, which was approved for hearing by the court. The court had earlier dismissed the appeal.

Heavy contingents of police have been deployed within and outside of the Supreme Court premises ahead of the hearing.
